ABOUT

JOSE BAENA

Jose Baena — environmental portrait

I am a Colombian tattoo artist with more than a decade dedicated to developing my work in black & grey realism. Over the years, my approach has evolved toward large-scale projects where the body becomes an essential part of the composition.

My work is deeply influenced by classical painting, particularly the Baroque and Neoclassical traditions. I am drawn to the way light and shadow can create depth, atmosphere and emotion, and I translate those principles into tattooing through tonal values, contrast and composition.

APPROACH

I don’t approach a tattoo as a collection of separate images. I think about how the composition moves around the body, how it reads from a distance, and how each secondary element can guide the eye and create movement without competing with the main subject. Anatomy, flow, depth and legibility are fundamental to the way I build large-scale work.

PROCESS

The process continues beyond the moment a tattoo is finished. Healing is an important part of my work. Seeing how the skin settles allows me to evaluate tonal relationships, recover subtle details when necessary and continue refining the piece toward the depth and balance I am looking for.

EVOLUTION

More than recognition, I am interested in evolution. Tattooing has given me a space where discipline, curiosity and the constant pursuit of improvement can coexist. For me, success is being able to continue doing what I love while pushing my work further with every project.
